US Election 2024: Kamala Harris has big lead among early voters

Kamala Harris has a 19-29 point advantage amongst American voters who say they have already cast their ballots, according to several US major polls.

The lead is larger than that the one Hilary Clinton had over Donald Trump in the run up to the 2016 election, when polls showed the then Democratic nominee leading between eight and 16 points.

Joe Biden had a greater margin in late 2020 polls, when Democrats embraced mail voting and Trump attacked it and persuaded his supporters not to do it.

Early voting data tends to favour Democrats, as the party encourages its supporters to cast their ballot early so less is left to chance on election day.

According to the University of Florida’s Election Lab, 54% of the 60 million Americans who have already voted are women.

An analysis of Reuters/Ipsos polls conducted in October shows that Harris led Trump by 12 points amongst women.

During the 2020 election, Donald Trump was vehemently opposed to early and mail-in voting, saying it was vulnerable to fraud. Although the Republican nominee has this year encouraged early voting, Trump supporters are still understood to be less enthusiastic about the practice than Harris voters.
