The Sports University of Nigeria, located in Idumuje-Ugboko, Delta State, made a historic mark in the nation’s academic landscape as it held its first and second combined matriculation ceremony. The 2023/2024 — 2024/2025 matriculation, which took place today (March 5, 2025), was a monumental occasion for the university, its students, and the Nigerian education system at large.
The ceremony was a joyous celebration, with the newly matriculated students expressing boundless excitement and pride as they officially began their academic journey at Africa’s first-ever Sports University. The matriculation, which brought together academics and crème de la crème, symbolized not only the growth of the university but also its commitment to providing an institution for young Nigerians passionate about sports and education
Founded by the esteemed Nigerian businessman and philanthropist Senator Ned Nwoko, the Sports University of Nigeria is dedicated to nurturing the talents of the youth, providing them with environment where students can thrive academically and athletically, forging a new path for future generations of African scholars and athletes.
Speaking at the event, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nduka Uraih, addressed the students with heartfelt words of encouragement. “Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in your academic lives. This university was built with you in mind. It is your dedication, hard work, and commitment that will ensure that this institution remains a beacon of excellence in Nigeria and Africa,” Prof. Uraih stated.
He went on to emphasize the importance of diligent study and personal responsibility, urging the students to leverage the opportunities provided by the university. “We have worked tirelessly to create a conducive learning environment for you, but it is up to you to make the most of it. Your parents, your families, and your communities expect you to succeed. Never forget that you are representing not just yourselves, but the future of African education,” Prof. Uraih said.
As Prof. Uraih concluded his address, he left the students with a parting thought: “Your journey starts today, and we are here to support you every step of the way. Work hard, stay focused, and never forget the dreams that brought you here.”

The university’s efforts to subsidize education make it more accessible to millions of Nigerian youths, giving them a chance at a brighter future. Last year, the university made headlines when the Founder Senator Ned Nwoko offered scholarships to some of the most promising students. We are here today to see the fruits of that vision come to life,” Nwoko said.

“As Founder and Chancellor, I am proud to see this vision come to life—an institution where young talents seamlessly balance academics with professional sports training, developing holistically as both scholars and athletes. Our goal is to nurture future champions and intellectuals who will excel on the global stage,” he stated.
Senator Nwoko reiterated that the university aims to cultivate future champions and thought leaders who will excel in sports while making significant societal contributions on a global scale.
