Abuja, NIGERIA – The Nigerian Army has been charged before an Imo State High Court sitting in Owerri for unlawful detention and alleged breach of fundamental human right of Mr Ifeanyi Nnodim from Umuzike, Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State.

Nnodim, through his lawyer, C.R. Okorie, (Ph.D), SAN, says his continued detention by the Nigerian Army over trumped-up allegation constitutes a gross violation of due process of law and amounts to an infringement of his fundamental rights as enshrined in sections 34, 35, and 41 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

Nnodim was said to have been arrested by the Nigerian Army on the June 1, 2023 at New Owerri, Imo State on trumped-up allegations over community leadership crisis.

According to his lawyer, in an application filed before the court, since Nnodim’s arrest he has been in the custody of the army without trial in competent court of jurisdiction.

The army is now being charged to court for breach and enforcement of fundamental human right because it failed to charge the applicant since his was arrested.
