Several killed in accident at abandoned Liberia gold mine

At least seven people are confirmed dead following an accident at an abandoned gold mine in Liberia on Monday night. The incident occurred in River Cess County, located in the south-central region of the West African nation.

Mines Minister Wilmot Paye acknowledged the difficulty in pinpointing the exact death toll at this time. A team has been dispatched to the remote site to assess the situation and provide a definitive number.

“I was informed that seven people died,” Minister Paye stated to Reuters. “However, I cannot confirm this information until the team reaches the location. The mine had been shut down for several months prior to the accident.”

Minister Paye also admitted a lack of knowledge regarding the company responsible for operating the mine before its closure. “Should we acquire details about the company involved, legal repercussions will follow,” he asserted.

Liberia, classified as one of the world’s poorest countries, possesses abundant natural resources, including gold, diamonds, and iron ore. The cause of the accident remains unclear at this time.
