Lusaka, ZAMBIA — President Hakainde Hichilema has applauded the people of Kawambwa, Kawama Ward, and Lilondo Ward for their peaceful conduct during the recent by- elections.

However, Tonse Alliance has rejected the election results, citing alleged electoral malpractice.

In a statement issued by State House chief communications specialist Clayson Hamasaka, President is particularly delighted with the people of Kawambwa Constituency for their overwhelming support of the UPND candidate, Musonda Nason, who has made history as the first UPND Member of Parliament from Luapula Province.

“These peaceful by-elections underscore Zambia’s unwavering commitment to democracy, as enshrined in the Republican Constitution. President Hichilema extended his congratulations to the UPND and its alliance partners for running a successful campaign, which reflects the people’s trust in their leadership,” Mr Hamasaka said.

He said President called on all elected officials to prioritise the needs of the people they serve, , emphasising the importance of leadership that is accountable and people-centered.“

Furthermore, the President commended all participating political parties for their contribution to strengthening Zambia’s democracy. He also expressed his gratitude to the Zambia Police Service and other law enforcement agencies for ensuring peace throughout the electoral process,” he said.

However, Tonse Alliance has rejected the election results, citing alleged electoral malpractice.Tonse Alliance spokesperson Sean Tembo accused the UPND of perpetrating violence across the constituency, claiming it created an atmosphere unsuitable for a free and fair election.“

The biased manner in which the Zambia Police Service conducted themselves whereby they failed to arrest ruling UPND party cadres who committed various offenses, but where quick to arrest opposition officials like Jean Chisenga, Lawyer Celestine Mukandila and NCP President Peter Chanda, meant that the Police deliberately unlawfully tilted the election in favor of the ruling UPND party,” he said.

He further alleged that polling agents and election monitors were chased away by UPND cadres in wards such as Lyanga, Lushiba, Fisaka, Senga, Kala, and Luena, in full view of the police.“

The refusal by presiding officers in 57 out of 59 polling stations to allow illiterate voters to pick someone of their choice to assist them raises serious concerns about the credibility of the process,” he added.

Mr Tembo said the Tonse Alliance’s Council of Leaders would meet soon to determine the next steps.
