Nigerian Catholic Priest Killed by Kidnappers Buried Amidst Grief

The Mass was presided over by His Lordship, Most Rev. Dennis Isizoh, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Aguleri, and was co-celebrated by Most Rev. Jonas-Benson Okoye, Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, and Most Rev. Patrick Eluke, Auxiliary Bishop of the Port-Harcourt Diocese. Also in attendance were Monsignor Anichebe Patrick Ezeobata, Vicar General of the Catholic Diocese of Nnewi, and numerous other clergy members, friends, and mourners who gathered to honor the life of the late priest.During the homily, Msgr. Ezeobata expressed deep sorrow at the untimely death of Fr. Okonkwo, lamenting that he had been taken in the prime of his life. Despite this, Msgr. Ezeobata emphasized that Fr. Okonkwo had lived a life of purpose, dedication, and service to the church and its community. “He was a man on a pilgrimage on earth,” Msgr. Ezeobata remarked, highlighting the positive impact the priest had made during his short life.Born in 1989, Fr. Okonkwo, who was a trained pharmacist, was ordained as a priest in July 2015. Prior to his death, he had recently completed his internship as a pharmacist in October 2024. Shortly after, he was appointed to manage the School of Nursing, Midwifery, and Medical Laboratory Sciences at the Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Ihiala, a post he held for barely two months before his tragic demise.The circumstances surrounding Fr. Okonkwo’s death were met with widespread shock and grief. He was abducted by armed kidnappers who had been terrorizing the region, and despite efforts to secure his release, he was ultimately killed. His death is part of an alarming pattern of violence, especially kidnapping, that has been escalating in southeastern Nigeria, where criminal gangs target individuals for ransom.Among those present at the funeral were prominent public figures, including Mr. Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, and Prof. Stella Chinyere Okunna, a former Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget in Anambra State. Both figures expressed their condolences and condemned the senseless killing, calling for more decisive action to address the rising wave of insecurity in the region.Fr. Okonkwo’s untimely death has left a deep void within the Catholic community, as he was widely regarded as a promising and dedicated servant of God. His passing is a stark reminder of the challenges posed by violent crime in Nigeria, especially in the southeast, and has prompted calls for greater efforts to combat insecurity and ensure justice for victims of such crimes.
