Lagos, NIGERIA — In a startling and highly charged announcement, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has accused the Nigerian government of orchestrating a covert campaign of violence against Igbo youths, specifically targeting the Orlu region in Imo State.
The pro-Biafra group, known for its contentious stance on Nigerian federalism, has alleged that the Nigerian Army and Police are complicit in what it describes as a deliberate and indiscriminate elimination of young people in the South-East.
In a statement released earlier today, IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Ema Powerful, claimed that the Nigerian government’s actions constitute “silent ethnic cleansing” and are part of a broader, sinister agenda to suppress the Igbo people. The statement, provocatively titled “Nigerian Government is Secretly Silencing the South East Region,” alleges that the security forces have been conducting extrajudicial executions with impunity.
“The latest atrocity involved the cold-blooded killing of youths from Obidi Ogberuru of Ihite-Owerri in Orlu,” Powerful stated. “These young men were going about their daily lives when they were intercepted and gunned down by soldiers on patrol. This brutal act is just one of many unreported killings and forced disappearances happening across Imo State, perpetrated by Nigerian security forces.”
IPOB’s explosive claims suggest a deeply entrenched pattern of violence against the Igbo community, which it alleges has persisted through successive Nigerian administrations. The statement draws a direct line from the Buhari administration to that of current President Bola Tinubu, accusing both of perpetuating a campaign of terror against the Igbo people.
“Why is the Nigerian Army patrolling our villages?” Powerful questioned. “The so-called silent genocide of Igbo youths, which began under Buhari, continues under Tinubu. This ongoing violence reflects a deep-seated animosity against the Igbo people. Nigerian soldiers and police have become the very terrorists they are meant to protect us from.”
IPOB’s statement suggests that this campaign is not only aimed at suppressing dissent but is also a deliberate attempt to provoke the Igbo community into armed resistance. By doing so, IPOB alleges, the Nigerian government hopes to justify a more extensive military crackdown akin to the horrors of the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970.
“The current administration appears to be goading the Igbo people into taking up arms,” the statement continues. “This is a blatant attempt to create a pretext for a full-scale war against Ndigbo, reminiscent of the atrocities committed during the Civil War.”
In response to these claims, IPOB is calling for immediate intervention from various quarters. The group is urging Igbo governors, members of the Igbo Diaspora, international human rights organizations, and the global community to take notice of what it describes as a systematic and violent repression of unarmed civilians in the South-East region.
The group’s demands include an end to the alleged indiscriminate arrests, extrajudicial killings, and forced disappearances of Igbo youths by security forces. IPOB asserts that the Nigerian government has explicitly targeted the Igbo community for elimination, labeling the situation as a deliberate and ongoing genocide.
As the situation continues to evolve, the international community watches closely, with human rights organizations and observers poised to assess the validity of IPOB’s claims and the potential for further escalation in Nigeria’s already volatile South-East region.
