Abia State Poised to Become Nigeria’s Electricity Hub, Says Former Power Minister

Aba, NIGERIA  — Professor Bart Nnaji, Chairman of Geometric Power and former Power Minister, has announced that Abia State could become Nigeria’s electricity hub. This bold assertion comes amid a recent visit by international electricity consultants to Geometric Power’s headquarters in Aba.

Geometric Power, which generates and distributes electricity within the Aba Ring-fenced Area—a region encompassing nine of Abia State’s 17 local government areas—is on the brink of significant developments. Nnaji highlighted two major power plants set to be built in the region, including a notable joint venture with General Electric (GE) from the United States. This plant, located in Ukwa West LGA, will generate 1,080 megawatts and represents GE’s first-ever joint venture with a local company. However, progress has been stalled by the Federal Government’s suspension of the World Bank’s partial risk guarantee (PRG) for power purchase agreements (PPAs) over five years ago.

The international team, comprising Nico Peterschmidt and Dipta Majumdar from INENUS, and Rajesh Kumar Jain of the International Solar Alliance, visited as part of their efforts to support Nigeria’s solar energy initiatives. Peterschmidt revealed that the World Bank has provided a $410 million loan for solar grid development, with Abia State a key candidate for funding.

Nnaji assured commitment to advancing Abia’s electricity goals, including the establishment of the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Commission. He praised Governor Alex Otti for his longstanding support of Geometric Power’s efforts.

Abia State Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engineer Ikechukwu Monday, emphasized that the new electricity initiatives align with the vision of establishing a state regulatory commission. He highlighted challenges in reaching remote communities and the necessity of Geometric Power’s involvement to ensure progress.

Ugo Opiegbe, Managing Director of Aba Power, outlined significant investments made by the company, including new substations, network expansions, and increased metering efforts. Despite inheriting around 131,000 customers, the company has significantly increased its customer base and improved service reliability.

The international consultants and state officials expressed their approval of Geometric Power’s substantial investments, estimated at $800 million, marking it as the largest investment in the Southeast region.
