The much-anticipated local government elections in Anambra State, held on Saturday, September 28, 2024, were marred by widespread irregularities, poor planning, and voter apathy, signalling a troubling departure from the promise of transparent and credible grassroots democracy. With just hours remaining before the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) announces the current 21 transition chairpersons as the official winners, frustration and disillusionment have gripped many residents and opposition groups.
Reports from across the state’s 21 local government areas reveal logistical failures. Electoral officers were absent from several polling units, leaving many voters unable to cast their ballots. In areas where elections did take place, there were reports of incomplete documentation, with some polling stations not provided with result sheets. The lack of primary materials, such as ballot boxes and proper security, heightened concerns of a rigged process. Many voters stayed home, disillusioned by what they perceived as a foregone conclusion, as the current chairpersons – appointed temporarily months ago—are widely expected to retain their positions through this contentious election.
The election was supposed to mark a significant step toward restoring democratic practices at the local government level. However, opposition parties, particularly the Labour Party, opted to boycott the process, citing manipulation, the stifling of competition, and a deliberate effort to perpetuate the status quo. The All Progressives Congress (APC) also expressed concerns about the transparency and fairness of the election, accusing Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration of using its influence to ensure victory for his faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) party, which Soludo leads.
“This election was never about giving the people of Anambra a chance to choose their leaders. It was a formality to validate the pre-selected winners,” said a senior figure within the opposition, who preferred to remain anonymous. “We knew from the start that the system was rigged.”
Adding to the controversy, the legislative amendments to the ANSIEC law were rushed through the State House of Assembly in just 24 hours, with Governor Soludo signing them into law. Civil society groups have strongly criticised the haste, arguing that it undermined the integrity of the electoral process.
“The speed at which these changes were made only raises further questions about the real intentions behind this election,” said Dr Chinwe Nnorom, a political analyst at Nnamdi Azikiwe University. “The lack of transparency and the hasty adjustments to the law suggests that the outcome was pre-determined.”
Voter apathy was also a significant concern, as many residents, disheartened by their lack of faith in the electoral process, chose to stay away from the polls. Reports from polling stations indicate that voter turnout was lower than expected in several areas. Residents expressed frustration with what they saw as another opportunity for the state’s political elite to entrench themselves in power rather than genuinely engage with the electorate.
“This was supposed to be our chance for change,” said Chinenye Okafor, a trader from Nnewi. “But this election is nothing but a joke. The outcome was decided before anyone even cast a vote.”
The Labour Party, which had previously announced its decision to boycott the election, echoed these sentiments, calling the process a “sham.” Ifeanyi Nwachukwu, a prominent Labour Party member, said, “This isn’t an election. It’s a staged event to give the illusion of democracy while ensuring that the status quo remains.”
With the final announcement expected soon, the legitimacy of the election process remains in serious doubt. Many political analysts and civil society groups warn that the erosion of democratic principles at the local government level could have long-lasting consequences for Nigeria’s democracy.
“What we are seeing in Anambra is not just a local issue; it’s a warning sign for the state of democracy across Nigeria,” said Dr Okey Ibe, a political commentator. “When grassroots democracy is compromised, it sends ripples through every level of governance.”
As ANSIEC prepares to declare the transition chairpersons winners, the state stands at a crossroads. The outcome of this election may not only affect Anambra but could set a troubling precedent for the future of local governance in Nigeria.
