The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has published the names of 79 Nigerian nationals it says are set to be deported as part of a renewed crackdown on criminal and undocumented immigrants under President Donald Trump’s administration.

According to information released on the DHS website on Monday, the individuals were convicted in the United States of offences ranging from fraud and drug trafficking to assault, manslaughter and robbery.

The agency said the arrests and deportation plans form part of a wider enforcement drive by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which the department describes as targeting “the worst of the worst” among foreign nationals with criminal convictions.

In a statement accompanying the list, DHS said: “The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is highlighting the worst of the worst criminal aliens arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“Under Secretary Noem’s leadership, the hardworking men and women of DHS and ICE are fulfilling President Trump’s promise and carrying out mass deportations, starting with the worst of the worst, including the illegal aliens you see here.”

The department did not specify when the deportations would take place, nor whether all individuals listed had exhausted their legal rights to appeal. Time Africa  has not independently verified the convictions or immigration status of those named.
