Delta State COMTOA Taskforce Director Warns Against Illegal Ticketing for Keke Operators

Delta, NIGERIA — In a decisive move to protect commercial tricycle operators also known as Keke in Delta State, Chief Uchenna Okafor, the Director General of the Taskforce and Monitoring of the Commercial Motorcycle and Tricycles Operators Association (COMTOA), has issued a stark warning against unauthorized ticketing practices.

During an unannounced visit to the Niger Bridge head on Tuesday, Okafor confronted a group that purportedly represented a local government council, which was allegedly coercing Keke operators to purchase a second, unofficial daily ticket.

The issue of double ticketing has become a significant concern among Keke operators, many of whom rely on their Keke for their livelihoods. These operators are already facing numerous challenges, including rising fuel costs and economic pressures. The additional financial burden of purchasing unauthorized tickets only exacerbates their struggles.

“Only state-authorized daily tickets should be purchased by Keke operators,” Okafor stated emphatically.

He said that the practice of forcing operators to buy additional tickets is not only illegal but also a form of extortion that his Taskforce will actively combat.

Reaffirming his commitment to combating illegal ticketing practices, he said, “We will take decisive action against any individuals or groups engaging in these exploitative practices,” he added.

He urged all Keke operators in Delta State to remain vigilant and report any such coercive tactics, reinforcing the importance of adhering to government regulations and protecting themselves from unscrupulous entities.

Okafor’s warning comes at a time when the Delta State government is intensifying efforts to regulate the operations of Keke riders, ensuring that they operate within the law and are protected from unscrupulous entities. He called on operators to remain vigilant and report any instances of coercion or intimidation.

The Taskforce’s commitment to addressing these issues reflects a broader initiative to safeguard the rights of transport operators across the state. By reinforcing the importance of adherence to government regulations, the Taskforce aims to create a more stable and fair working environment for all Keke operators.

Local leaders and stakeholders have praised Okafor’s proactive approach, emphasizing the need for cooperation between the government and Keke operators to ensure compliance and reduce instances of fraud.
