The socio-cultural Aapex Igbo organisation in the United Kingdom, Ogbako Ndigbo UK (ONIUK), has called for a peaceful election in Imo State as the citizens prepare to exercise their civic duties on Saturday the 11th of November 2023.
In a press release signed by the President, Dr.Jude Eze, Vice President, Dr. Daisy Nwaozuzu and the Secretary General, Barrister Kenneth Udeoka, the group appealed to politicians to refrain from making inflammatory statements to ensure a peaceful election even at it called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) and every other government and party representative who are playing different roles in the election to ensure deepen democratic process.
“ONIUK urges INEC to be a fair umpire in the forthcoming Gubernatorial Election while pleading with all state actors to behave in a peaceful manner that reflects the nonviolent nature of Imolites. At this crucial point in time, there is a need for INEC to live above board by being independent in all ramifications as required,” group said.
The group added: “Ogbako Ndi Igbo frowns at the attack on the opposition parties and their candidates by party agents and reiterates the call for a free and fair elections in Imo State on Saturday. We believe that it is the responsibility of everyone to ensure that we experience a free and fair election— all political parties, voters, the government, security forces, civil society etc.
“ONIUK call on the Imo State Government to ensure the safety of her citizens and therefore urged Imolites to exercise their civic responsibility peacefully, and devoid of molestation. Ndi Imo should always realise that irrespective of parties and affiliation, all candidates are from Imo State, and as such, should desist from any act of violence, be law abiding and hold the government accountable for the dividend of democracy.
“As we all know, peaceful election will usher in enabling environment for economic development.
“Similarly, a fair playing field by all parties will bring peace to Ndi Imo and Ala Igbo at large.
“No state can function under a chaotic and volatile condition without peace, love and order. Imo State deserves peace in this political dispensation and deserves better now.
“Ogbako wishes Ndi Imo State a peaceful and fair election.”
