Anambra As African Dubai In The Making: Who’s Still In Doubt?

By Christian ABURIME

Ours is a society where afro-pessimism is an ingrained habit by which we often assess our leaders, their visions, pronouncements and actions. Perhaps, due to repeated experience of failed promises, citizens tend to take every new promise by leaders with a pinch of salt. That is the stuff of cynicism, a state of mind that doubts everything and makes skeptics out of many Nigerians.

In Anambra State today, a strain of pathological cynicism has also afflicted some observers and critics of government. The source of their doubt is the grand vision of transforming Anambra into a sort of African Dubai in terms of development, as proclaimed by Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, during his election campaigns. With over two years into his tenure, critics’ tongues have been waging: where is the African Dubai promised by Soludo?

Well, the critics can’t see an African Dubai in Anambra yet because they neither grasp the process of development nor understand what it takes to translate a vision to reality. It is not because the visionary has abandoned the vision. It’s not because he can’t deliver the vision. It is critics who need to be educated on the dynamics of transforming a state from its current position to a desired destination.

Now, transforming a leader’s vision into reality is a formidable endeavour that requires not only a vivid imagination but also meticulous planning and a steadfast commitment to laying the right foundations. Modern Dubai itself was not built in an instant, neither were other prosperous metropolitan hubs around the world. Some took decades to arrive, while others took centuries. The journey from a dream to its tangible manifestation is often long and fraught with challenges, yet it is precisely this journey that defines the tenacity and resilience of a visionary leader.

Governor Soludo’s sublime vision for Anambra State is not a fleeting dream but a comprehensive blueprint for sustainable development. Over the past two years till date, he has been diligently laying the groundwork for this transformation, focusing on key areas that are pivotal for long-term progress. One of the cornerstones of this vision is the development of robust road infrastructure. By improving road networks, Governor Soludo is not only enhancing connectivity within the state but also facilitating smoother trade and commerce, which are essential for economic growth.

Energy solutions have also been a critical part of Governor Soludo’s strategy. Recognising that regular power supply is fundamental for industrialisation and economic activities, he has been spearheading initiatives to create sustainable energy solutions. These efforts aim to ensure that businesses and households in Anambra enjoy reliable electricity, thereby fostering an environment conducive to growth and innovation.

Modernising the transportation system is another key aspect of Governor Soludo’s vision. By investing in efficient public transport, he is addressing the mobility needs of the populace, reducing traffic congestion, and contributing to a cleaner environment. These efforts are laying the foundation for a more organised and accessible urban landscape.

Education, too, has not been left out of Governor Soludo’s comprehensive plan. His administration has undertaken massive recruitment of teachers, provided free tuition, and upgraded public school facilities. These initiatives are aimed at nurturing the next generation of leaders and innovators, ensuring that Anambra’s future is in capable hands. By prioritising education, Governor Soludo is investing in human capital, which is indispensable for sustainable development.

The healthcare sector has also seen significant attention under Governor Soludo’s leadership. Revamping healthcare facilities and ensuring access to quality medical services are crucial for the well-being of the populace. A healthy society is a productive society, and by strengthening healthcare infrastructure, Governor Soludo is ensuring that the people of Anambra are equipped to contribute effectively to the state’s growth.

Urban renewal is another area where Governor Soludo’s vision is taking shape. By undertaking projects that rejuvenate urban areas or transform slums, he is creating spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and sustainable. These efforts are transforming Anambra’s cities into modern hubs that can attract investment and tourism.

Environmental threats are being tackled head-on, with initiatives aimed at mitigating the impacts of gully erosion, climate change and promoting sustainable practices. Governor Soludo understands that a healthy environment is crucial for the long-term prosperity of the state, and his administration is taking proactive steps to safeguard Anambra’s natural resources.

In the digital age, fostering a digital economy is imperative, and Governor Soludo is acutely aware of this. By building an ecosystem for the acquisition of digital skills via Solution Innovation District, he is positioning Anambra as a leader in technological innovation. These efforts are not only creating job opportunities but also ensuring that the state remains competitive in a rapidly evolving global economy.

Critics may argue that Governor Soludo’s vision is too grandiose or unrealistic, but they overlook the meticulous groundwork that is being laid. Transforming Anambra into an African Dubai is a monumental task that requires time, effort, and dogged commitment. Rome was not built in a day, and neither will this vision be fully realised overnight. However, the progress made thus far is a tribute to Governor Soludo’s dedication and strategic planning.

In other words, Governor Charles Soludo is steadfastly committed to his vision of transforming Anambra State into a modern Dubai of Africa. Through his focused efforts on infrastructure, energy, transportation, education, healthcare, urban renewal, environmental sustainability, industrialisation and digital innovation, the foundations for this grand vision are being laid. While the journey is far from complete, the strides made thus far indicate that Anambra’s transformation is not just a dream but a reality in the making. Governor Soludo’s vision is on course, taking shape, and with continued perseverance, it will undoubtedly come to full fruition.
